I stayed in Makrigialos which was lovely, but the roads around it were quite tricky so it took a while to get anywhere. We visited Iaepetra, Sitia, Agios Nikolaos, Knossos which I didnt really like as a lot of it has been recreated and might not be in the true position, Gortys, Malia, Festos and my absolute favourite which was Gournia.

I loved the Achaeological Museum in Heraklion and the ancient Venetian walls and buildings, but didnt care too much for the city. Its a jumping off point for a lot of people and to me, it was just a big city.

If I go back then I would look to stay around Chania as the area is rich in history and Chania itself, whilst big and bustling, has lots of history and heritage.

You could consider staying somewhere close to Ayas Nikoloas which is not too far from the main airport. The area around is rich in culture and you could jump on a boat to Spinalonga, or head up onto the Lassithi Plateau.

Crete is really a wonderful island and the hop from Athens via plane is only around 45 minutes. The ferry would be great but it takes a lot longer. over 3 years ago
