What is it like there?

almost 12 years ago about Gibraltar, Gibraltar

I saw an interesting itinerary that included Gibraltar and I am wondering what is there to see and do. Is it worth going?

I'd say it's worth going.. you don't find it on many "mainstream" tours these days, and if for nothing else, it's somewhere you'll be able to safely brag to your friends that you've been and they haven't.

Best places to visit while you are there..

    1. The Rock of Gibraltar
    2. Catalan Bay
    3. St. Michael's Cave
    4. Apes Den almost 12 years ago

I visited Gibraltar years ago ('93) and really enjoyed it. It has a unique cultural mix of Spanish and English, with a strong hint of the Moroccan influence from across the Strait. The people staunchly regard themselves as 'Gibaltarian' - not Spanish. We has some local knowledge which helped, but we also scored a taxi-driver tour of the Rock and the surrounding town including the caves, the apes and a good dose of British Imperialist history. People are friendly and the town has a cozy, safe feel to it. It has a very quirky road into the town that crosses the main airport runway. A red traffic light means that that a plane is about to cross. A word of caution - our local contact advised us to pretty much drive straight through the Spanish city of La Linea which butts up against the border with Gibraltar. At least back in those days it was not regarded as completely tourist-friendly. almost 12 years ago

La Linea is fine, just not a place worth visiting for any reason. Gibraltar is worth visiting for the tour of the Rock and it's cave system. The view from the top and the Barbary Apes are the best things about the place. Oh and tax free shopping! almost 12 years ago
