The Schlaffmeile (http://www.schlafmeile.de/) is the best in town and also usually the cheapest. Its situated on the east side of town which I argue is by far the coolest part of town. Aside from that theres quite a few good hostels around that part of Fredrichshain. Sunflower is very good, Pegasus is also good. Lettem sleep in Prenzelauer Berg is a good option too. If you want to stay in Mitte (the central bit) check out Circus hostel, steer clear of Generator is you can. But Berlin isn't the sort of town that has a "center" per se, your better off staying in central east Berlin (Frederichshain, Prenzelauer Berg of Kreuzberg [although technically Kreuzberg is former West]) or if thats not your cup of tea stay in central west. If you want to stay in central West Berlin then stay at Jetpak City. almost 10 years ago
Yep I would recommend anything Russ says. He is an expert on most things relating to Berlin (cheap things anyway).
I have only seen the Sunflower and one other I can't remember. The Sunflower was pretty cool and very relaxed atmosphere.
By the way, Mariana this is Russell my best mate and Russell this is Mariana, Teresa's best friend almost 10 years ago
Nice to meet you too Mariana,
Berlin is all about districts. I would recommend either staying in Frederichshain, Prenzelauer Berg of Kreuzberg. In Fredrichshain doesnt have a lot on the surface but theres heaps of culture and underground stuff, street art and so on. Very East. There I would recommend the schlaffmeile, the sunflower, or Pegasus. Prenzelauer Berg is a little richer but also quite cool, like Frederichshain it has nice bars and cafes. if you stay there stay at Lettem Sleep. The other district I would recommend is Kreuzberg, Im not too sure about the hostels there but I think Baxpacks should be cool. Kreuzberg is the old slums of the west that was surounded by the wall, lots of cultural history there, especially for the turkish and gay communities.
Anyway nice to meet you, and have fun in Berlin!
p.s. do my old tour www.alternativeberlin.com you'll love it almost 10 years ago
oh I'm sorry I didn't reply before!!
Berlin was great! we ended up staying in Mitte, 'cause we had a place to be everyday in Invalidenstrasse. I didn't tell you, but I was in kind of a business trip. ehehe I went with some friends to sell a magazine in an art festival, Illustrative, so we had some work for this, more than we expected. We weren't able to go to the Alternative Tour this way, but we visited Frederichshain, Kreuzberg. We wet to have dinner and went to some bars there. I loved Frederichshain. Berlin is such an amazing city! a city to live... Also Mitte surprised me a lot, with all the fancy stores and so on, it's a cool area as well. Very close to our house there was this cool bar, White Trash, very recommendable.
It was already really, really cold. uau, 0º!
well, thanks for all your help, in spite we didn't stay in these cool hostels you recommended (they stay here for the next time), we were visiting some of the areas you talked about, it was really cool to know where to go...
when are you visiting Portugal? ;) almost 10 years ago
