Retired couple in our 60s going to St. Augustine for one week in April. Suggestions on where to stay.
Can't help you with accommodations in St. Augustine but you should also consider spending a couple of days in New Smyrna Beach, @ 70 miles south of St. A. If you rent a car it takes about an hour to drive here straight down I-95. We have beautiful, pristine beaches, an old fort ruin in town, surfing, kayaking, boating, paddle boarding, quite a few fine art galleries, and two towns - one beachside, the other on the mainland. There is also a water taxi. Our restaurants are mostly locally owned, meaning we don't have a deluge of predictable chain eateries. There are bicycle routes on and off road and a 1.5 mile boardwalk loop over sand dunes at the north beachside peninsula. There is a brand new Hampton Inn beachside and several bed and breakfasts in town including The Nightswan on Riverside Drive. Hope this helps a bit in expanding your horizons. St. Augustine is quite historic but very touristy. New Smyrna Beach is the real deal - with not so much as a parking meter in sight. about 5 years ago
