I spent 5 weeks in the French Polynesia about a year ago. Get the inter island passes; otherwise, your ticket is about $120 one way to each island and the package is around $500. When I was in Huahine, I stayed with some local people. Most of the good places to stay cannot be found on the internet. It would be possible to just show up and look for signs for a "Fare" which is a private bungalow on someones land. There is a cultural center called the "Fare Pote" that just opened a really cute beachfront bungalow with kitchen that you could look into. There are some nice small hotels there but I'm assuming they are very expensive. It is an island where you can get a place for $30 a night or $300 depending on what you want/need. over 6 years ago

Each island in French Polynesia has a unique feel. Therefore, Huahine, Moorea and Bora Bora are very different.
Self catering beach front bungalows are no where to be found on Bora Bora (according to my knowledge), but you might find them on some of the other islands.
For an overview of ten of French Polynesia's islands, have a look at our website: www.travelintense.com/eco-travel-destinations/french-polynesia. It will show you what you can expect and do on the islands.

In Bora Bora, Hotel Matira (3 stars) offers affordable, roomy bungalows on the island's most beautiful beach. No overwater bungalows, however...nearby MaiTai hotel has some for less than the more luxurious hotel chains. over 2 years ago
