Provence - What quiet village w/in 1 hour of more activity would people recommend for the summertime for parents, grandparents & toddler?
We want to be able to walk to cafes and bakeries and a local restaurant or two. But we'll also try to be close enough to a larger place to visit. While our first choice is Provence, if someone has a better suggestion, we'll explore it.

I visited friends in Le Grau du Roi, south of Nimes last year, It has a beautiful long beach & is lively in summer/early autumn because of its beautiful seaside location. It is very much bull country. When I arrived in September there was a festival on which included a kind of bull running where all these expert horsemen & women surround the doors to the trucks the bulls are in and the ride up & beside the bulls through the streets with great fanfare. It's a spectacle all right & the bulls are quite small however one died the night before I arrived when it was let loose on the beach into teasing youths, panicked & broke its neck. A freak accident & some of the people there are no doubt hard cases but in general the bulls are revered & not tortured to death like some parts of Spain. There is a beautiful wide canal running through the town almost like a little Venice with all the water. They hold water jousting competitions there during the festival in September which is very entertaining. You can visit the historic fortress of Aignes Morte from there. Le Grau du Roi is in the Camarge area of France, a low lying wetlands area with flamingos & is famous for its horses, I think white ones. There is a direct rail connection from Nimes, most of it non descript till you get to Aignes Morte & the outskirts of Le Grau du Roi & the beautiful wetlands. It has restaurants & is not a big town, everything is within walking distance. almost 10 years ago
