I would highly recommend visiting the city of Tours (http://www.experienceloire.com/tours.htm) in the spring and summer months especially when the streets are in bloom. Surrounding the city are chateaus that inspired some of the greatest fairytales - it certainly felt like I was walking through Rapunzel or Cinderellas castle! The chateaus of Azay-le-rideau, Chambord, Villandry and Chenonceau were the 4 my day tour visited and they were tres magnificent - if you want to be mesmerised, visit Tours! over 4 years ago

I suggest staying in Amboise, but Tours would be good too. Amboise is a wonderful town and old chateau. Many famous chateaux are not that far but you do need some transport or help from local tourism office. For us Villandry and Chenonceau were chateau highlights. Food, pastry, wine, bicycle trips. Da Vinci house. And the caves growing mushrooms!! over 4 years ago
