I would say it depends on the area you travel. I was in Paris handsome people got annoyed but others were very helpful. If anything would at least try to speak even if it's only a few words. They like to see foreigners trying and then they will be more helpful. over 6 years ago

Yes, like in most countries, people want to see that you appreciate and try their language. In most places a tourist would go, there will be plenty of English. But people will be far happier to help you if you can say the basics:
    - Bonjour / Bon soir - hello / good evening
    - (non) merci (beaucoup) - (no) thank you (very much)
    - s'il vous plait - please over 6 years ago

It's the long old history between England and France, they prefer you TRY and speak French even in the major city like Paris. To make the long story short, it's the pride thing. Learn at least few useful sentences in French, use them in the beginning and slowly mix it with English in the conversation... don't forget to smile.

Perhaps a little in Paris----outside of Paris, the French are so sweet. Be aware of how charming, attractive and smart the Parisian women are when it comes to the simplest item of apparel. over 6 years ago

Don't pay for a big breakfast at a hotel. Pick a cafe advertising petit dejouner (pronounced "petty day-jou-nay"), i.e., continental breakfast. They'll know what you want and will probably reply in English. It'll give you confidence to try a few other simple phrases. over 6 years ago
