would you recommend using these where ever possible as a good way to get around the area in limited time and if so would you recommend buying tickets online in advance or can you get better deals from locals on the day? being august i expect it to be very busy so do not want to waste hours lining up, thanks

In my experience those hop-on/hop-off services are expensive. They're also pretty slow as a form of transport, only go to the obvious tourist landmarks and are full of tourists (you're not going to meet any lovals or get a feel for living like a local).
Having said that, I have used them when traveling with my young kids, it's an easy way for them to get a first-time experience of a place, especially because there's usually a tourist commentary onboard.
But if you're grown-ups, live a little. Work out how to use the local public transport - it's more fun and an adventure in itself. You'll feel really proud of yourself when you've mastered it. over 3 years ago
