Will be traveling through Spain France Italy and possibly a few surrounding country's within 2 to 3 months. should I purchase a eurorail pass before leaving US or just purchase tickets while in Europe? I have read that Americans must purchase eurorail passes before leaving (not sure why) but I am worried that I will be limiting myself ...and I want to find the best options

It would be best to purchase EuroRail/Eurail tickets prior to leaving US. Main reason is it is alot more expensive when buying at the station for point-to-point tickets. Decide the number of countries (and if countries is bordering countries or not ie.Germany-Belgium-Amsterdam) you wish to visit. This will allow you to decide whether you'll need a Global, Select, Regional or One-Country Pass.

Then count the number of travel days. This will ensure you do not over buy the number of days for the EuroRail/Eurail ticket. Tickets for public transport within the city you visit is inexpensive. Using the Global Pass for this would honestly be a waste of money. Given the beautiful landscape and scenery, it's best to walk to soak it all in (and shop a little while at it too;))

I'm including here a link to help you find the best pass for your trip. I hope you find it useful. Enjoy your trip!!
