Any advise on travel to Egypt if it is best to do on your own or with a travel group and what are some of the places we must see? what is the best time of the year to travel there?
Female travelers will encounter quite a few hassles from the locals - it's best to go with a bloke who either is your husband or is happy to be called your husband!
Some countries are easy to get around and see the sights under your own steam, but I don't think Egypt is one of them. Although it can be done on your own, it would certainly be much, much easier with a tour group.
I went with Gecko adventures a while back and had a great time. Check out some of their itineraries for ideas, but highlights for me were the pyramids and valley of the kings, camping in the desert (particularly western desert), Aswan, Abu Simbel, Dahab, and floating on a felucca on the Nile. Strangely enough that is most of the places on their Egypt Encompassed trip! about 11 years agoAnswered by richard maddock via Travellr.com
I went 2 years ago on my own and had a fantastic time. Ok I'm a guy but it's no worse than Turkey, or other similar tourist places. The only hassle you'll get is from street vendors or people trying to lure you into their shops. Worse comes to worse if you do feel intimidated do as a couple of girls did with me and make a male friend who will be your surrogate guy when you feel the need. If you're blonde and attractive the hassle will be worse but then you'll equally make that male friend easier... ;) about 11 years ago
As much as I prefer travelling under my own steam, Egypt is a little easier as a tour (but select carefully to keep some flexibility). In simple terms, most go for a cruise down the Nile from Luxor to Aswan stopping at various temples etc along the way and at each end. Luxor has lots to see so make sure there is enough time to see the burial valleys, Luxor and Karnak temples and a handful of other ancient sights. Abu Simbel is a worthwhile extra from Aswan if you like the temples (second best after Karnak in my view) and have some extra cash. Avoid the really hot weather in the middle of the year is worthwhile advice. Cairo is a bustling amazing city with all kind of places to see from the Islamic areas, the Coptic Christian area (old churches) plus of course the rich acient history of pyramids, the Sphinx and the museum. You can add in the Sinai, western desert, Alexandria and more but the above will give a solid 10 to 12 day experience of Egypt and its remarkable history. A quick read on the pharoah history, the gods etc at the front of a guide book or more will help appreciate some of what you see and its advanced nature and rich history. almost 11 years ago
