    The short answer from living in Ecuador for almost two months is that many things are safe in numbers and with a good sense about you. I have had friends in some very risky situations, some on their own part and others even though they took precautions. I would never say "don't go to _____" as such a blanket statement. I think it'd be the type of place you'd want to go with a good guide or someone who you trust/know someone if they are Ecuadorean. Warning: many people will say they are "guides", try to seek out some good information in the capital before embarking out there. about 7 years ago
