I've read the area around the main train station can be dicey. Should I have any concern about walking to my Old Town hotel from there?

You should keep your eyes open that's for sure but generally speaking, despite being one of the worst areas in Prague, it is much safer than in other bigger Western cities. Most of the people that hang around the train station are homeless and normally they don't bug people. That said if you want to get closer to your hotel and not even get out of the train station you can use the metro line.
