Backpacking around Costa Rica

almost 9 years ago about Costa Rica

The wife and I are going to be living in Costa Rica for three months in early 2012. Looking for advice on good coastal areas to live for a while, recommendations on decent, inexpensive accommodations, etc...
Also, looking for advice from those of you who have (or currently live) in the country about the best places to stay/travel thru while there.

Caribe is the best!! Try Puerto Viejo, you can stay at Rocking Js in a hammock for $1/night, or a tent for $5.. Beaches in the area are amazing, the vibe is like nothing else in the country.. Pacific coast is a lot more touristy and northern pacific is more expensive.. Try south and go for a dolphin/whale tour.. Monteverde is a little village at the top of a mountain, great place for canopy and mountain adventures... Good luck and pura vida! almost 9 years ago

    We second Monteverde/Santa Elena
    Also recommend Montezuma.

We had a great time in those two spots.

I traveled as a student backpacker on the pacific coast and yes it's a little more expensive than the east coast but still totally do-able. hostel accom is around 7-10 dollars per night and the scenery and wild-life is amazing there so if you have time i would check out both coasts almost 9 years ago
