Arenal is about a 2.5 hour drive from San Jose and there is a lot to see there. I would recommend spending at least a night or 2 in that area to really get a chance to experience everything. (hot springs, volcano hiking tours)
If that doesn't fit into your time schedule, try a Poas Volcano excursion. there are several tour operators that will do a one day tour leaving your hotel in San Jose by 9am and visiting the Poas Volcano and the La Paz Waterfall Gardens. I have never used them, but have heard good things about Costa Rica Horizons.
Enjoy your trip! over 9 years agoAnswered by Stephanie via WorldNomads.com
Not sure about alot of Adventure Tours in Arenal, but know that if you head south to Jaco, Hermosa area there are tons of things to do including Canopy (Vista Los Suenos), Horseback Riding (Discovery Horse Tours), huge surf town with Surf Lessons (I've used Del Mar Surf Camp and they're really great for surf & yoga and fitness classes), SUP, and more, depending on what kind of adventure you are looking for. over 9 years agoAnswered by Angie via WorldNomads.com
I run a non-profit volunteer organization and we sent a lot of people to the Arenal area. I always use a tour company called Desafio. They are always extremely safe, professional and fun. And they do lots of work in the community to give back. They recently won some sort of award from Trip Advisor. Something about being amongst the top 10 most fun adventure tours in the world.
