I would like to visit the country, but I am not sure what the public transport system is like.

Can anyone comment?

Based on my visit to San Jose and the Osa Peninsula, I would say - unequivocally - that I would not want a car. The city was pretty crazy - and I'm sure public transport (or taxis) would be much less hectic than driving. In the countryside, the roads are just awful. I was thankful that we had arranged transport through the places we stayed...the pro drivers knew how to preserve the undercarriage of the car far better than my husband or I! over 10 years ago

It really comes down to where you are going. When I was there I had a car and had no problems at all and it made easier to have control of when and where I could stop. However if you are staying around San Jose then public transit will suffice. over 10 years ago

As mentioned above it does help if you're staying near San Jose. The public buses and coaches are generally comfortable, friendly and on time, but they mainly use San Jose as a hub.

As a result if you're a couple of hours outside you'll be travelling into San Jose, changing bus and then travelling onwards, adding quite a lot of time to your journey. over 10 years ago

We hired drivers and were glad that we did. The roads are very rough. It was nice to be able to enjoy the drive rather than worrying about finding the next turn. One driver was exceptional - he pointed out wildlife and stopped to allow us a closer look. He even took us to his house to see a baby sloth up close and personal. We would highly recommend hiring a driver. Have a great trip - don't miss Tabacon hot springs. over 10 years ago
