My next trip is going to be backpacking in Colombia and as the country is quite big and I don't want to waste too much time going by bus I was wondering if there are any low budget airlines in Colombia?

    have a look at www.easyfly.com

you may find some others also. Flying is very common in Colombia as many locals don't believe the buses are safe.

I personally loved the bus rides, the scenery of the mountains and the excitement of the road blocks.

Possibly the best buses in the world too!! Very comfy!!! over 11 years ago

there's plenty of national and regional airlines flying all over the country but you'll probably need to plan at least 1-2 weeks in advance to get a good rate. Here's some options (there might be more in the while, I was there in 2001):

The first two are the biggest local airlines and have online booking / ticket buying and an English version of the site; for some of the smaller airlines you would have to book by phone and collect the ticket usually at the airport.

there was another one head-quartered in Medellin, Antioquia something, cannot remember the whole name but should be easy to find when there.

Most buses are really nice indeed, but since the distances are quite big you might want to combine flights & bus rides, depending on how much time you've got. over 11 years ago

I believe Avianca and Aero Republica are the safest. Haven't been there in a while but flying inside Colombia is relatively cheap. Also plan where you go. FARC terrorists own about 1/3 of the country and Americans are a target for kidnapping for ransom. Go to state.gov and check the State Department's travel warnings about what cities to avoid. Good source for any country you go to. They also have health concerns and recommended vaccinations. As does the World Health Organization (WHO). Do a little planning and have a great trip. Bogota is a wonderful city in the mountains with an average temp of about 70 degrees. (sweater in the morning and short sleeves in the afternoon. But use one of the taxis that park at the hotels. They speak English will be wearing ties and are well regulated and safe and will help guide you where not to go. about 11 years ago

Wowowowo i planned to take buses in colombia since i think you enjoy more the views and is nice to experience the roads and all that, but i just checked the plain ticket from bogota to medellin and it was about 12000 pesos , around 4-5 euros...

For that price there is no way i will take the bus, i think i will have plenty of chances to take the bus.

Thanks for all the information!! over 10 years ago

    Hola Anita,
AIRES (visit http://www.aires.aero/Home/Default.aspx) is offering great prices. As Mihaela told you, SATENA is another good option. over 10 years ago

Don't use buses if it's possible. It's safe but here there is a lot of mountains. So you will lose too much time. Going bogota Medellin is like 11 hours. Bogota Cartagena is like 20... almost 8 years ago
