I am seriously considering a trip to Bogota and Cartagena in December. I don't speak Spanish and will be traveling alone. I am male of 45 years old. I have read all sort of warnings of walking around in groups and not alone, not walking around after dark etc etc. the problem is I do like to interact with people and would like to go to pubs, restaurants etc at night. Would this be too risky? Would it be risky in both these cities? Should I rather leave out Bogota and only visit Cartagena? Really keen for some advice on this

It is no more risky than visiting any other city. In fact, I would say it is safer than many. I am a female in my 30s who travelled solo to Colombia last year, and spent time in both cities. I felt totally safe and local people were looking out for me, helping me find my way around, making sure I was ok. This doesn't even happen in my hometown.
Do your research, check out the no-go areas (every city has them), don't carry valuables or excessive cash - basically, just be sensible. Colombia is wonderful. about 3 years ago
