Cuba is a safe country (the soldiers in the trees next to the beach with guns are there to protect you). Follow normal precautions.
But make sure you do not buy cigars off the street / beach - they're either stolen or fakes. Make sure you have a receipt to show at customs in Cuba, and, most likely, whichever country you bring them into.
Your most likely risk is Montezuma's Revenge ... Many people think it is from the water, but I've seen some pretty bad food handling practices ....
Cubans are lovely people and it is a great place to visit.
I plan Colombia and Panama soon myself, so let me know what you learn! about 5 years ago

Panama seems as safe as any other place I've been. Take normal precautions. Panamanians will say hello or good day, and they're just being polite - unlike other places, this is not an introduction to try to sell you something! about 5 years ago

I traveled to Colombia by myself and felt very safe there... Walking the old city in Cartagena at night alone also felt very safe... over 4 years ago
