Be especially careful at night on the long haul trains - thieves and pickpockets can try to cut open your bags even if they are secured to you or to a luggage rack. But take a cable and lock anyway, which is at least one deterrent. There are watchful attendants but still, be wary especially during stops.

Much agreed on the toilet paper front! And chances are you'll have squat toilets, abrupt stops can send you flying to the other side of the bathroom stall as well. Just be careful in that whole situation. :)

Related to the trains, I tend to keep my valuables on me, i.e. my computer, i pod etc. when sleeping. The hard sleepers on the slow trains are small, but it's worth it if you don't want your stuff stolen. At the same time, I hear less stories about stuff being stolen on trains then in a lot of other countries. Sure, anywhere you go there will be thieves or scams, but I feel that China isn't as bad as some areas of the world for this. Finally, look after your shoes. I know this sounds funny, but I have heard stories about people having their shoes stolen when they are sleeping and waking up with flip flops on their feet. over 9 years ago
