HI Guys,
I'm going to a Southeast Asia trip in a few days...I have a 24 hours layover in Shanghai.
I've already checked and (I hope so) i'll be able to have a transit visa and can go out and visit the city..
I'm planing get a simple hostel for the night and just do some sightseeing (I'll arrive 2PM and my flight is next day 2PM).

Does anyone recommend any area/things to do around there?

The Blue Mountain Hostel (https://www.google.com/search?q=blue+mountain+hostel+shanghai&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS722US722&oq=blue+mountain+hostel&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0l3.7678j0j9&hl=en-US&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8#istate=lrl:iv&rlimm=7959886895096672780) is very clean for a hostel. The guests and staff are very nice and helpful. It's centrally located and a short walk from some very cheap street food and restaurants. A trip to SE Asia is not right until you have street food in every destination. The best dumpling place is right around the corner from the hostel. It's called Yang's Dumplings. Be very careful when you eat there as their noodle soups are extremely spicy and their soup dumplings are flaming hot. The hostel is also 3-4 blocks from East Nanjing Road, shanghai's main shopping street. If shopping is not your jam, which probably isn't, the hostel is close to the trains that can take you to the Bund, Temple of City Gods, and next to it is the Yu Garden. Tian Zi Fang is a network of alleyways where you can pop into gift shops to get all kinds of knick knacks and rest up at a cafe. If you still have time you can visit another Buddhist Temple, Jing'an Temple. If you're looking for the expat and/or party crowd, Xintiandi is pretty neat too. I hope this is helpful. about 4 years ago

I too have a layover in Shanghai for about 12 hours. This is really helpful. Although I do land in the evening around 5:30 or so, I'm sure any of these districts will be just as interesting at night, as it is during the day. Do you have any recommendations for things to do during the evening/ night? :) about 3 years ago

I have a 12 hour layover as well on Jan. 7th- do you need a visa to explore for a few hours if you leave the airport? I arrive early in the morning and am trying to decide if I should leave or just hang out in the airport. I've read they have nice lounges where you can rent space to nap and such but would rather spend a few hours checking out the city if possible. about 3 years ago
