A great way to end a day in Beijing is at one of the rooftop bars in Sanlitun - I liked Migas for a cocktail and a (somewhat smoggy) view. almost 4 years ago

There is the obligatory tourist "must sees" of Tienanmen Square, The Forbidden city, and the Temple of Heaven. but in the 5 visits I've made to Beijing in the last 7 years I count The Summer Palace and the Great Wall at Mutianyu as the most impressive. Allocate a whole day to the Summer Palace as the grounds are vast. 2 other lesser known sights are the Bell and Drum Towers, which will take you into the Hutong area, with the traditional courtyard dwellings, and the Back Lakes (Hou Hai). Do the latter at dusk as the largest of the lakes has a large number of bars and restaurants along the shore. It's very popular with locals, expats and visitors and is very busy. Many of the bars have live music. Some say the drinks are expensive but you're paying for the ambience. We spent an hour walking around the lake at dusk and loved the atmosphere. We stopped for a beer and it's a buzzing place. If you like shopping, there's Wangfujing Street, which is a 15 minute walk from Tiananmen Square and it also has a night food market. If you like authentic brands at cheap prices, try Silk Street Market. almost 4 years ago
