They are both very different places so it really depends what it is you are after. I visited Chengde for a week and loved it. The food was great but very spicy! The air quality is slightly better than Beijing and there are some nice things to visit, including the famous Panda sanctuary. However, as a resident of Beijing for the last 18months, I would definitely recommend coming here. You are in a great position for exploring other cities such as Xi'an and are only 5 hours on the train from Shanghai. Beijing itself has something for everyone. There is a lot of history and culture, the mandarin spoken here is very pure (essential point if you plan to learn the language), there is a thriving business district and the cost of living is very low. If you want to intern in English, I'm sure there will be lots of opportunities in Beijing. about 3 years ago
