If you want to get away fromthe madding crowds, see some amazing scenery, swim in a crystal clear river (I know... who would've thought!), hire a pushie or a motor scooter & see some absolutely gorgeous sights and be looked after beautifully, book yourself into the Li River Retreat a couple of kms outside Yangshuo in Guangxi Province. Fly into Guilin & either make your own way or arrange for the Retreat to send a car for the (aporox) 1 hr drive. We picked the Retreat completely randomly a couple of years ago & couldn't believe our luck once we arrived & saw what & where it is. Can't recommend it (& places like it) highly enough. It's on a quiet country lane & not a soul in sight til you go into Yangshuo. Oh! it's a small & lovely hotel and it's cheap! You can drift leisurely down the Li River on a bamboo punt, swim in the river straight across the road from the Retreat, take a tour to the rice terraces, ride your scooter for miles & go exploring on your own, watch the light show against the karsts in town (amazing) with a gazillion people, etc etc etc. Point is..... get out of the cities & out into some gorgeous countryside away from the throngs. Hope all that helps. almost 5 years ago

You can explore Sichuan as you will be in Chengdu: take extra time to travel north or east... Tibetan border areas are amazing.. almost 5 years ago

Thanks, still mulling this over. Thought I might make it to Lhasa but just don't have enough time. Maybe northern Szechuan would be a good idea. almost 5 years ago
