The airport is well connected with the rest of the train network.

I would recommend going to Ti Yu Xi Lu 体育西路, it is located in the same line as the airport and has many good shopping and eating venues. Beijing Road 北京路 is a short walk from there and this a shopping street with too much food to eat.

The surrounding streets also provide an adventure to the old and new aspects of Guangzhou.

Dont stay at the airport - boriiiiing! Simply jump on the metro into Guangzhou proper and the choices are all yours as to whether you want to see historic or scenic sights, or shopping at the many markets or the big mega-malls. For an intro to the many markets and malls see http://gzshopper.com, I like this site because it actually shows maps of where the places are, much easier to make plans. I would suggest Beijing Road and nearby Shang Xia Jiu Street.

For sightseeing heres a suggested itenerary from http://www.visitgz.com: Time Square→CITIC Plaza→-East Railway Station Square→Tian He Sports Center→Urban Bus Tour (Inner Ring Expressway)→Huanghua Gang Commemoration Park→Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall→Yuexiu Park (The Five Rams Statue, Guangzhou Museum)→Guangxiao Temple→Chen Clan Academy→Dim Sum Lunch→Pearl River Scene along the Riverside Road→Ersha Island (Xinhai Music Hall and Guangdong Art Museum)→Pearl River New Town→Former Site of Huangpu Military Academy→Guangyuandong Expressway→Baiyun Mountain Scenic Spots→Yuntai Garden

If you get the chance make sure you try (if you havent already) Dian Xin (Dim Sum) which is a wildly popular breakfast and lunch in Guangdong. over 7 years ago
