You will certainly get to know the city well, but if you are making the trek to visit Northern China, explore a bit more! Depending on when you go, check out Harbin. They have an ice festival in winter and given it's proximity to N Korea and Russia, an interesting cultural mix not found elsewhere in China. The Xian-Beijing loop is a common too, so consider that. Qingdao also has appeal, and a brewery! almost 7 years ago

Your week in Beijing will go fast. Try the subway to get around in. Try a foot massage, try the food at Wanfujing, eat the street food (make sure it is freshly cooked) take a day trip to the Great Wall. The War Museum near West Beijing Railway station is great. All the normal tourist spots will fascinate you. The previous answer is great but you will need more time. China is a very large country and travel can eat up your time.
