I always wanted to visit the salt lakes in northern Chile.
Parque Lauca has big crazy volcanoes next to salt lakes. There are some great pictures here:

Just across the border in Bolivia there is Salar de Uyuni which are fantastic salt plains. Mind blowing pictures from here aswell.

Arica is at the very top of Chile. It is an awesome little beach town with a wicked night life and gnarly surf.

Icquique is a bit further south, more of a resort town, but nice beaches.

San Pedro de Atacama is one of the best places in north. It's a very nice city, where people around the world use as base to go to desert, salt lakes and geisers. From there you can go to amazing Uyuni Salar, in Bolivia. over 11 years ago

You can come around 16th of July and participate in the celebration of La Virgen de la Tirana, one of the most original religious festivities, with devote dancers and ceremonial costumes,
Also you can visit the saltpeter towns of Humberstone and Santa Laura, both Unesco's world heritage places. over 9 years ago

If you like history the Chinchorro culture museum outside Arica is cool. The worlds oldest mummies are kept there amongst other ancient stuff. The Atacama desert and the coastline is spectacular if you are in to amazing nature. over 9 years ago

If you stay in San pedro de atacama there are a lot of fun day trips you can do. I suggest seeing the valley of the moon and the oasis ( where you can find flamingos in The desert) also go the hot springs and see Vulcan licancabur. I loved the desert area and I hope you do too! over 9 years ago

Fly to Atacama and take a bus to San Pedro de Atacama. From there you can do lots of interesting and challenging itineraries: Aguas Calientes, the valley of the cacti, Valle de la Luna (sunset!!!), stargazing, Salar de Atacama (the most impressing sunset I ever saw), Licancabur Volcano, Rio Grande valley and - of course - the Tatio Geysers. over 9 years ago
