so if you do use the US$$ they give you change in Riel, so why not just use Riel in the first place

    You will be given your change in a mixture of US and Riel. And Riel is only used for the smaller change, almost like what would be the coin part.

    You can most certainly use ALL Riel if you wish but you would be carrying a huge wad of notes around and even the Cambodians use and prefer US.

    Thanks for your reply, we will be moving onto Vietnam after Cambodia so will be dealing with dong as well almost 5 years ago

    All cash machines in Cambodia dispense US dollars. If you need to break a large US bill, just ask at a bank and they'll do it for you. almost 5 years ago

    Everyone, a big word of caution if you are traveling overland from Thailand to Cambodia from Trat. If you don't have Dollars and need Riels stay away from the moneychangers on the border! I've seen travelers lose almost half their money simply because they didn't know the official exchange rate!! over 4 years ago
