Just returned from Myanmar and found that Visa and MasterCard can be used in most hotels and in businesses frequented by tourists or those selling higher end items, like jewelry, lacquerware, silk cloth, fine art, etc, and in some restaurants in bigger cities. There is often a surcharge (2-4%) to use credit cards (in addition to the foreign exchange fees charged by card issuers) as compared to a discount (4-10%) the shop owner may offer for using cash. (You have to ask for it.) USD in pristine condition in any denomination can be used interchangeably with kyat in most places, with the exception of pagodas and monasteries which prefer kyat. 3 months ago
