We're looking at a trip to Myanmar at the end of the year and this is what I can find.

According to the Australian Consulate, people travelling to Myanmar fall into two categories:
    1) Package tours
    2) Independent travellers.

For the latter, you have to enter Myanmar within 3 months from the date of issue of the visa with a maximum stay of 28 days.

    You'll need:
    - A valid passport with blank pages
    - TWO Tourist visa application forms per person
    - THREE passport size photographs per person (Colour photos only)
    - A letter giving departure date from Australia and Entry & Departure dates for Myanmar (provide daytime contact phone number)
    - Visa fee of A$ 35.00 per person (see above)
    - Return self-addressed pre-paid envelope or courier bag (SAFE SUBMISSION & RETURN OF PASSPORTS IS APPLICANTS' RESPONSIBILITY)

    see: http://www.myanmarembassycanberra.com/visainformation/visa_information.htm#a

So, no, it looks like the same process as 15 years ago when we were last there.

    Hope this helps

UPDATE. I'd check this information carefully and it could change at any time however, this seems to be the latest Visa information as of today:

    * Effective 1/5/10. Travellers can obtain a visa on arrival at the international airports in Yangon and Mandalay. Business visa on arrival fee is USD$30 and is valid for 28 days and cannot be extended. The traveller must present a return/onward ticket, two photos (4x6cm) and declare USD$300 or equivalent foreign currency to cover his/her duration of stay in Myanmar.

    * For those travellers who wish to apply for visa in Australia prior to arrival please note the following: Visa can not be used for overland entry except at Tachileik, Three Pagoda Pass, Myawaddy and Kawthaung checkpoints along the Myanmar-Thailand border. If traveling on a pre-paid tour you must supply confirmation letter from the tour company giving full details of tour and dates. Compulsory Currency Exchange: a minimum of USD 200.- has to be changed into local currency on arrival. Any additional currency may be exchanged at the Cash Counters of travel agency "Myanmar Travels & Tours", hotels and Myanmar Foreign Trade Bank. Re-exchange into foreign currency, less the equivalent of USD 300, is possible on departure.

    * Note: 3 passport photograph(s) per applicant will need to be supplied at the time of application. Photos must be presented on normal passport photographic paper. Note: The travellers original passport will need to be supplied to Visalink Note: A flight itinerary will need to be supplied over 10 years ago

    Uh huh - changed again:

"Myanmar will cease visa-on-arrival (VOA) facilities for foreign visitors at Yangon and Mandalay International Airports from Sept 1. The Department of Immigration and National Registration said the move was needed to allow it to "check the records of tourist arrivals". From Sept 1 all foreign visitors have to apply in advance for a visa at Myanmar embassies or use pre-arranged VOA through travel agencies."

    • So currently there is no real 'Visa on Arrival Service' - you still need to apply to your respective consulate BEFORE you arrive. Original Nomad over 9 years ago

Correct, you canĀ“t just pop up in the Arrival hall in Yangon and get a Visa. Needs to be pre-arranged. Another option is to get en express visa in Bangkok. Takes approx. 24h or "normal" visa takes around 3 days so they say. Works if you are in Bangkok before you enter Myanmar. over 9 years ago

We have some news for Myanmar Visas:
if you flight directly from Siem Reap, Guang Zhou or Chiang Mai. You can only bring your passport with your photos then make a visa on arrival.
