I think you'll find that the closer you get to this border, the more sensitive it gets. Although I can't be completely sure, I think you'll find the border well and truly closed. Flying into Yangon is the usual route in ... in fact I'm not even sure if ANY other border crossings are open. Anyone? over 10 years ago

There are no legitimate border crossings from China into Myanmar. However there are a number of trade crossings where Chinese trucks enter/ depart the country (i.e. Ruili)

As Simon says, these areas are very sensitive to the current Myanmar government and there are frequent military activities in these areas.

There is a crossing from Mae Sai on the far northern Thai/ Myanmar border but you're only allowed to travel some 30km from the checkpoint and only up to 2 days (from memory). This is a special zone that allows tourists to 'taste' Myanmar. There's a similar crossing at Tha Sai Luat on the western Thai/ Myanmar border too - with the same limitations.

So if you want to really visit Myanmar, fly into Yangon, spend a day or 2 there, then jump a cheap internal flight (there are a number of carriers) to go north. over 10 years ago

It used to be possible to cross at Mae Sai from China and go further inland, but for this one needed a permit and a guide with a car. All of the above could be arranged with a tourist agency in Kungming and was quite pricey. I'm not sure if it works now, but can easily be checked in Kungming. about 10 years ago

I don't believe there is a crossing that tourists can use. There are some crossing between Thailand and Myanmar, but you can only go for a few days and within a certain region in Myanmar. Please check www.crossborder.info - a wiki we're trying to fill with usefull info on border crossings! almost 6 years ago
