My partner and I are planning a trip around the world for a year... we are leaving in October ... and our first Stop would be Sao Paolo... we are trying to plan the trip the most cost effective way but most importantly saver ... we are trying to find other alternatives for accomodation to save us a few bucks but also be in the confort of our own savety ... Thank you soo much for any comments you could give us ٩(•̮̮̃•̃)۶

    Well you can rent apartments but I wouldn't consider this much of a safer option.

    Then there is always hotels but they are usually much more expensive and where the rich tourists go is where the darker side of Rio will go too.

    Backpackers are actually quite safe, if you see the place I recommended on the question below you will be in an enclosed and guarded area that you feel very secure in.

    have a look for "pousadas" - it's kind of like homestay accommodation. Fewer guests than a backpackers (usually only you) but still cheaper than a hotel. And you get the benefit of having a local to let you know about safety issues in the area. almost 10 years ago
