WE ARE TWO OLD LADIES IN OUR 70s ARE WE SAFE TO GO ON HOLIDAY TO RIO DE JANEIRO , RIO-IGUASSU FALLS & PANAMA
I've definitely heard that petty crime is rife through Rio, so take extra precaution to safeguard your gear. Don't wear bags that can be snatched, hide cash where possible ( and split it around your person, not all in one pocket).
If you're considering travelling into any of the favela's - check out this article on staying safe - http://journals.worldnomads.com/safetyhub/story/28541/Brazil/Travelling-safely-in-Rios-favelas over 9 years ago
A couple of gals from Sheffield should be able to show those twigs from Ipanema a thing or two, eh? As Chris says, Rio does have a reputation for petty crime, keep a close eye on your bag, try not to look too much like a tourist, and leave the jewellery and watches at home.
Think about a debit card rather than a credit card (to limit your losses if it is stolen). Carry a photocopy of your passport for ID, not the real thing - leave that locked in the hotel's safe.
Ask your hotel staff about the safe places and the not so safe places. Use cabs if you go out at night, and just like you would at home, avoid dark deserted streets.
Just use that "basic Yorkshire intelligence' (my parents are from near Wakefield) and you'll be safe. And if you are robbed or pick pocketed, don't let it ruin your holiday, if you've taken these precautions it'll only be a few quid, or an old camera (leave the expensive one at home) and put it down to experience.
Enjoy the holiday. over 9 years ago
Well Joan... Phil covered this question quite well!! I've been to Rio three times and now return every year. I was one of the people that experienced petty crime. My friend and I broke all the rules and all it cost us was 25 dollars and a watch. Definitely leave jewelery at home and like Chris said spread valuables about your persons. Best to avoid Copacabana in evening. Ipanema is very nice and safe!! Have a great time and go if you have'nt already!! Rio is amazingly beautiful and full of energy. over 9 years ago
