The place I stayed while I was in Rio de Janeiro was an awesome little side street that had about 5 hostels in it.
It was 3 blocks from Ipanema beach on 175 Rua Barao da Torre on the eastern end.
The five hostels were:
Ipanema Waves Hostel
Harmonia Hostel
Rio Backpackers Ipanema
The LightHouse Hostel
Girl From Ipanema Hostel
As you can imagine having 5 hostels right next to each other means everyone parties together and it is very secure with guards and a locked gate to make sure your things are secure. almost 12 years ago -
Niko's recommendation is pretty good. In a less specific perspective, your goal is to stay in Copacabana, Ipanema or Leblon. Close to the beach. almost 12 years ago

Another thing to remember.
When you get to the airport you will be approached by plenty of people offering to rent apartments in Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon.
Don't just refuse them. Check it out as prices can be bargained down to a reasonable price depending on what time of year you are there.
The place will always be a bit less than what is advertised and try and travel with the person back to their apartment or you may be duped by a taxi driver with his own apartment deal (this happened to us) almost 12 years ago -
Ipanema is certainly a much nicer beach and location, overall. Copacabana beach faces Guanabara Bay and gets a lot of pollution, which Ipanema/Leblon miraculously avoids.
The Barao de Torre hostels are all good locations, albeit a bit more costly, but worth it in the end.
* We did a bit of drinking at the "Ipanema Beach House" which is a bit further down Barao de Torre, and has a really nice pool and a good little poolside bar. Because it's enclosed in apartments, you'll need to stay quiet/move on elsewhere by 10pm.
* "Che Legarto" on Rua Paul Redfern, towards the southern end of Ipanema is a big hostel complex surrounding by good backpacker and local bars/clubs, too. over 11 years ago -
Run out from Copacabana, you will prefer to stay in Ipanema, Leblon or Gavea. You can go check Copacabana, but I really recomend you guys to stay in one of these other areas mentioned above. almost 11 years ago

While I'm not sure of which hostel is the best, I do know that if you're traveling solo or just want to meet other travelers there is a new website called http://inbed.me where you can book hostels without paying a booking fee and then can see who else will be at your hostel before you get there. Really neat site! about 9 years ago

We stayed in Rio Backpackers which was good. It was small but friendly with free caipirinhas for newcomers! It was also close-by to Copacabana Beach. The area felt really safe to me. almost 10 years ago
