It's one of the safer countries in Europe.... which does not mean you should let your guard down, always stay vigilant.
The greatest threat to visitors is landmines. There are thousands still littered across the landscape, but not in the cities. Just make sure you check with local authorities before you go hiking.
Bosnia's criminal element seems to be fond of settling disputes with guns and bombs, but there's no indication they target visitors and the chances of being an "innocent victim" are very small.
Mid 2010 a policeman was killed in an explosion at a police station... again seemingly linked to local crime.
And stay away from soccer fans, especially when a Bosnian side plays a Croatian team, tempers and loyalties run hot. almost 7 years ago

It's definitely a safe place to visit and one of the most remarkable places in Europe. Sarajevo is awesome... especially the Burek! I have to say though that Mostar is still on my top three list for cities in the world. It is something truly special. Keep your wits about you and you'll be fine. Such hospitable people. about 6 years ago

Is a very safe place, i have been in many places and had many good experiences there. Just dont go to hills that you are not sure are free of mines.

We loved Bosnia!!! I agree with the comment about Mostar - we have been to every country in Europe and I think Mostar would be in my top 3 cities as well! It is totally safe for the regular traveller. Have a lovely time :-) almost 6 years ago

Right now Bosnia is just like any regular countries in EU. Stay on the main roads at all times. Most of the grasslands are safe, and the ones that have land mines are clearly marked. But you never know. The best places to visit are the old city in Sarajevo with great local food called ćevapi, burek and sarma among many others. Mostar is another great one, and Tuzla, the salt city. The great thing about all of these places is the atmosfere. The people walking around, sitting at an outside bar etc. bring city alive. Most of the younger population speak English as well as some other EU languages, so help is just a person away if you should need some during your exploation. almost 6 years ago

Safer than many places in the so called developed ( western) world.

For more details, I found an interesting article that busts some myths about the safety of people visiting Sarajevo and Bosnia:
