    CR is said to be the safest place is Central America. Some say it has crime rates lower than the US! It certainly has a low homicide rate. It's not on the route between the cocaine growing areas and the US, so drug gang crime is low. However, petty crime is quite high. Snatch-n-grab, opportunistic theft. sadly there is also some express kidnapping and San Jose can be dodgy after dark. The "slashed tyre" robbery trick is common, especially on the airport road 9and at night). Most of our correspondents tell us it's okay as long as you keep your wits about you.
