St Maarten is much busier and much more touristy than Barbados, which is calmer and more laid back. Although the French side, St Martin, is calmer. It is cheaper to get to St Maarten than Barbados. over 7 years ago

Barbados offers the option of total relaxation on the many lovely beaches. You have the choice of either the South coast which is generally busier and less expensive, or the West coast which offers a fab selection of top hotels and fine dining. October is a very quiet mont for Barbados so good deals to be had. over 7 years ago

If you want all the top designers (Prada, Bulgarii, etc.), St. Marten's your spot. Otherwise, go to Barbados. over 7 years ago

We loved colonial Barbados, but busy St Maarten is fascinating in that you have a Dutch and French side, each classic representations of their European colonisers. According to locals the French side is bigger because rather than fighting for rule, the representative of each country started in the south and north respectively and walked, their meeting point marking the boundary. Apparently the Dutch representative was lazy and spent too much time partying, giving the French the biggest territory.

If you choose Barbados, I hope you love Rihanna; her music can be heard just about everywhere. almost 7 years ago
