We are two female friends who are looking to take a trip to the Bahamas. We are not familiar with any of the Islands and are looking to have a safe vacation. I'm not one to stay at Resorts/Casinos/Big Hotels - I'd rather stay in a quiet non tourist area with the beach in walking distance. Which of these islands would be the best pic?

crime can be bad IF you don't take precautions. be sensible, play it safe and it lowers teh likelihood you'll be a victim.
I took this from our Bahamas safety tips, which you can read here: http://www.worldnomads.com/travel-safety/the-bahamas/

crime tends to happen most in Nassau's "Over The Hill" neighbourhoods, a place where tourists have no business going. The Freeport section of Grand Bahama also attracts its fair share of crime. The outer Family or Out Islands, such as Bimini and Abaco, of the Bahamas have far less crime than New Providence. about 5 years ago

Agreed, New Providence (Nassau) & Grand Bahama may have more to do as far as activities but they also have the largest populations, hence more crime. I am fond of the Exumas as there is peace & quiet, pretty much & if you dive or snorkel, there is lots of that. Also Green Turtle Cay in the Abacos is real nice. And if you reallllllly want to get away there is Crooked Island. I haven't been to Bimini since it was overhauled but back in the day it was very Key West-y with a lot less people. And it is close to the states. Big country spread out over a large piece of Ocean, you can spend years enjoying the Islands. Don't forget the Turks & Caicos Islands a little further south. Have fun. about 5 years ago
