There will be 1 couple and 3 guys in the group. We're looking at anywhere from Cairns up to Port Douglas. The 3 of us guys are single too, so will probably be looking to go out while the couple has some alone time.
I know of two places which may appeal to you depending on what your plans are while you are there.
The first place is called The Lakes. It is a resort about 30 minutes walk from the city centre. The place is really modern and is set up like a micro suburb. There is a main street, which is lined with apartment buildings with around 20 apartments in each. It has three pools, a restaurant / bar, a gym and heaps of bbq facilities. You could spend the whole of your holiday there if you so wished, but both times I have been there I have done trips to Port Douglas, Mossman, and the reef and still made use of the offerings. I rate it highly. And It's not that expensive considering everything you have available to you, you can get a three bedroom apartment for around $300 a night.

Obviously if you plan on spending your time out seeing what Cairns and surrounding area's has to offer then the aforementioned highlights may not seem that enticing. I have stayed at another place called The Tropical Queenslander. It's a bit more budget, has two small pools and is about 20 minutes walk to the city centre. I stayed there recently with three others in a room with a double and two singles for about $150 a night. It was alright, although the bedding was pretty average and the air conditioners noisy. But it did the job. There is another place a bit closer in on the same street called the Cairns Queenslander, it isn't meant to be as good as the Tropical Queenslander but I don't know what the difference in price is.
If price is an issue then I would go for the Tropical Queenslander, but the extra cost of The Lakes is definately made up in comfort and facilities.
Hope that helps

Thanks for the comprehensive answer!
We actually decided to stay in Port Douglas at a place called Rendezvous (we booked before reading your post), as we've heard PD is generally nicer than Cairns. The Lakes looks excellent though; I may stay there if I return some day. almost 10 years ago
