Hire a car and go via the coast. Is about ten hours driving time but you could take it over a couple of days. Head east through Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley to Lakes Entrance, On the Gippsland Lakes, the most beautiful little fishing village where you can buy fish fresh from the boats. You could happily spend a week in this lovely place - the ninety mile beach, boating, the mountain hinterland, beautiful bush walks and a mild climate. Then north to Mallacoota, Merrimbula Moroochydoor and a host of beautiful country towns on the NSW coast, through Woolongong and onto Sydney. You could even call in and spend a night in Canberra if you wished. the trip to Sydney this way is a holiday in itself. over 8 years ago

You can hire a car from Redspot car rentals. They doing cheap $9 p/day rentals at the moment from Melbourne to Sydney. That way you actually get to explore the coast and see everything with your own eyes, and not stuck on a plane or train.
