We are travelling as a couple in Australia and New Zealand and hadn't realised that the hostel private rooms are priced per person, rather than by room. They seem pretty pricey for "budget" accommodation. We are planning some time in campervans, but other than that, I'm wondering if anyone could suggest other ways to stay places which may work out better. I'm wondering if motels/guesthouses may work out similar price.

Yes your'e right, the backpacker accomodation can be quite pricey in NZ & Aus. We often found cheap Motels for the same price as Hostels/Backpackers. Where are you planning on travelling & how long for? about 9 years ago

Great sites/tips - thanks for that.
We'll be in NZ for a month and OZ for 3. We'll probably do a long stretch in a campervan in OZ as that seems cost effective when covering long distances/gives flexibility - but I think for the rest of it we will mix and match with hostels, hotel/motels and I like the look of the b&bs/homestays too. about 9 years ago
