Well, it's very VERY big, and blue and DEEP. Ah, but if you mean what's it like to dive on and explore, then I'd say spectacular and you need lots of time. But it's easy to start with a company like http://www.ProDive.com.au and learn gently and still have a wonderful time. I've never dived the wreck, but the Yongala (off Townsville) is supposed to be one of the best dives on the east coast.

I explored a very small portion of the GBR from Cairns and found it truely amazing. We did a day trip and snorkled, rather than scuba dived - our choice.
We also went out fishing onto the GBR from Port Douglas - again an amazing experience. almost 8 years ago
One of Australia’s most remarkable natural gifts, the Great Barrier Reef is blessed with the breathtaking beauty of the world’s largest coral reef. The reef contains an abundance of marine life and comprises of over 3000 individual reef systems, coral cays and literally hundreds of picturesque tropical islands with some of the worlds most beautiful sun-soaked, golden beaches.
The Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven wonders of the natural world, viewing it from a greater distance, you can understand why. It is larger than the Great Wall of China and the only living thing on earth visible from space.
The Great Barrier Reef includes over 3000 reefs, around 940 islands and cays, and stretches 2,300 kms along the Queensland coastline. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is 345,000 km2, that’s larger than the entire area of the UK and Ireland combined!
The reef is immensely diverse with 1,500 species of fish, 359 types of hard coral, one third of the world’s soft corals, six of the world’s seven species of threatened marine turtle and more than 30 species of marine mammals including vulnerable dugongs.
You can get some great discounts on dive trips in Cairns. If you visit www.divedirectory.com.au you can get a 15% discount on all live bookings. Some great operators would be.

Did you mean Great barrier reef in Australia or Great barrier island in New Zealand?
If the island, then I can tell you it is very beautiful and pristine. There are several great hikes and many beaches, some great for surfing. It is remote however, taking several hours by ferry from Auckland. almost 8 years ago
