1. You have to see the reef. pick a boat and go for a dive
2. Cairns would be strange without an adrenelin fix. Skydive or Bunji or both?
3. Cairns is the biggest party town in Oz. Be ready for 7 night party, topless girls on bars, and drinking games
4. Good side trips are .... Cape Tribulation or a drive round the hills behind cairns over 11 years agoAnswered bywhoissteveanyway via

Cairns is a great jumping off point to the GBR. We did a trip out to the reef and did some snorkelling. Its very easy to do.
To be honest, I preferred to stay in Port Douglas. We did trips up to the Daintree National Park which were amazing, up into the Tablelands is a great day out or just going out fishing for the day.
The drive from Cairns to PD is nice - right along the coast. Palm Cove is glitzy but the pier is great for fishing from. Kuranda, near to Cairns is okay, but I thought it was expensive to do the train/skyrail trip and we drove ourselves up to the top and then mooched around. over 11 years ago -
Another vote for the reef.
I stayed in Palm Cove last time I was up there and absolutely loved the place. It's a bit more relaxed/slower than Cairns, more of a place to take a partner rather than party, great spot/restaurants etc. though. over 11 years ago -
You wil not be disappointed with a day trip to Port Douglas. Great drive along Coast Road. Great restaurants, great pubs, great beach, Classic Aussie laid back feel about the place. over 11 years ago

I just got back from Cairns and I did a three day live-on-board dive tour with prodive cairns. If you can scuba dive then I highly recommend this trip! We did 11 dives, including 2 night dives, and had our own reefs to dive and explore! Waking up at 6am and going for a morning dive with turtles and sharks is amazing!
I took my camera along and took some photos - here's a link to my flickr account

Yes Port Douglas is an amazing location, the problem is , that it can be a lot more expensive. Most dive charters depart from cairns and head up to the port Douglas reefs and beyond. You will also get a better deal with dive operators based in cairns. I hope the links below help you get a good deal as you will receive a 15% discount through this site.
