I am traveling with kids so I am thinking it might be easier to take a train rather than drive around lots of curvy roads

    Gday Alejandra,

It's about a two hour train from Sydney up to Katoomba but the trip (once you are past the urban sprawl) is really pretty actually. Beautiful bushland out both sides of the train on the way up and back.

Once you are in Katoomba, everything is pretty accessible on foot or by local bus so you don't really need a car up there either - especially if you just want to do some walks and take in the beautiful scenery.

    Enjoy the trip!

As a car owner I still prefer to catch the train up as traffic jams are common on the highway when you're coming back to the city. I just grab the paper and a coffee and kick back for a slow, winding climb across the mountain face. There are train stops near all the tourist lookouts and walks - Katoomba, Leura, Blackheath, Wentworth Falls and Glen Brook (for example). Also, the main hostels at Katoomba are both within 1km of the station, on the way to Echo Point. Too easy. almost 10 years ago

    Hi Alejandra,

The train is the easiest way to get up to the mountains but if you have someone to drive you, and you don't have to keep reading maps to work out which way to go, the drive can actually be enjoyable and it does make it easier to get around when up there. If you have more than day to explore then I'd take a car - and a driver who knows the way!

Don't forget the NSW Central Coast if you're looking for a place to take the kids for a day or two. Enjoy the mountains - I love them.

It's easy driving up to the mountains but the train is convenient as well. If you're only going up for a day or two a train will be fine as most of the main things to see are pretty easy to get to from the train stations but it might get annoying not having your own transport if you're planning on staying longer as the bus services aren't very good (at least they weren't years ago when I lived there). almost 10 years ago
