My husband and I want to drive from Cairns to Sydney (Nov-Dec) and are trying to find a good campervan company to rent from. So far all I can find are horror stories and no helpful information on good, solid, trustworthy companies to rent from. I know to definitely stay away from Apollo, but other than that, I'm at a bit of a loss. Any suggestions?
Sounds like an exciting trip! All I can say is, avoid the cheaper van companies – the less you pay, the more you'll suffer! You're really going to have to splurge on that. My best advice would be to hire a diesel van, petrol is often more expensive.
I hired a van through Britz Campervans in New Zealand, and they were really reliable, responsive when we needed help (our nav man stopped working, so they didn't add any additional charges at the end of the trip to cover my phone bill!), and the vehicles were all in pristine conditions.
Look, I'm from Sydney, so I've never needed to rent a van in Aus, but hopefully this helps.

This is very good to know, thank you Milly! We will also be driving through New Zealand, and are trying to decide between campervan and car at the moment (trying to figure out the most cost-effective option), so having this information is great. Thanks again! over 2 years ago
100% go by van! Everyone said to me that it'd be expensive, and if we wanted to save money we should hire a car and stay in hotels, but boy were we glad we didn't!
Again, go diesel option for sure in New Zealand, they have a few sneaky road taxes for petrol vehicles.
When are you doing the road trip in NZ? over 2 years ago
We did the same trip last year, well almost. We did Brisbane to Sydney with Travellers Autobarn and loved every minute. I remember them having deals leaving from Cairns, so check them out too. www.travellers-autobarn.com.au
