Im travelling to Sydney from UK in September, staying with family and then going backpacking/travelling from Oct- Dec but staying in Sydney for a few months after that.

Would backpackers insurance cover me? Would I need it for the full year or just for the 12 weeks I would be travelling? Im baffled looking in to the different options! some basic advice would be gratefully received!

Hi Chloe, Katrina from WorldNomads.com here.

Travel insurance is there to help whenever you are away from home for all of the benefits listed under the policy, but mainly for emergency medical and repatriation expenses if you are seriously injured and need emergency medical care.

Accidents happen, whether you're travelling or staying with family, so it really is up to you to decide how it may impact you. Also be aware: even though there are reciprocal health agreements between Australia and the UK, medical expenses can be very costly, depending on what's happened to you. Also, if you don't have travel insurance, you wont be covered for things like an emergency evacuation back home if you're seriously injured and cannot continue your trip.

It's really up to you, but if you decide that you only want cover for your travels around Australia, then you can buy a policy after you have left the UK through us: https://www.worldnomads.com/travel-insurance/prices-and-benefits-country.aspx?Country=GBR

Please do read the policy wording carefully so you know what's covered and what's not covered under the policy. Also be aware of restrictions on cover for mobile phones and other electronics you might take with you (for UK residents, you must specify these items on the policy we provide for cover to apply). That way, if something happens and you do need to use it, then you'll understand how the policy can help.

Hope you have an amazing trip (we're based in Australia, so we're a little biased about travelling here!) about 7 years ago
