Guessing there might be lots of gravel roads on Kangaroo Island - not finding any obvious references on hertz sites etc about particular coverage for this. Wondering if it exists at all or if it's not usually a problem.

Yes. You cannot travel around Kangaroo Island and see the island's major attractions without driving on dirt roads. Make sure you have insurance which covers you for driving on dirt roads. It is my experience that the average European has very limited experience of dirt roads and is more likely to have an accident than people who have driven on these difficult roads most of their lives. You have been warned. over 10 years ago

Thanks Bruce. I'll make sure I any necessary insurance then. Fortunately I'm an Aussie with sufficient experience driving gravel roads in Tassie - but in my own car! over 10 years ago

I hired a car there. There is no insurance from dusk till dawn due to the amount of wildlife that comes out after dark. I drove at night and stuck to 40km per hour. Any faster and you will run into a lot of wildlife. about 9 years ago

You can see the major highlights on Kangaroo Island from sealed roads. They run around the island. They are in red and orange on this map - http://uk.southaustralia.com/media/documents/about-south-australia/map-kangaroo-island.pdf. Would recommend that you avoid driving at night due to the amount of wildlife on the island even if you are covered by your insurance. Worth upgrading your insurance as well - just in case.

Note that some car hire companies will not allow you to take a car across on the ferry i.e. Avis, Budget. Hertz have three depots on the island in Penneshaw, Kingscote and Kingscote airport if you want to hire a car when you get there and Budget also have at least one depot on the island. Thrify allow you to take a car across to the island. You are generally permitted to take rented camper vans across to the island by ferry. Please note, this is all subject to change - double check with your rental company.

Have a great time on Kangaroo Island - it's an amazing place! :) over 7 years ago
