I'm planning a road trip up to Brisbane in November. Other than hiring a car for the one way trip and flying back to Melbourne, I don't plan on making any accommodation bookings.

Any tips on places I should visit along the way? Does anyone know roughly how long it takes to drive that far? I've given myself two weeks.

Essentially you have 2 options - the coastal or inland routes. The coast roads are by far the most spectacular and beautiful, but the journey will take you considerably longer. I'd be allowing 1.5 - 2 days for a leasurely journey from Melbourne to Sydney and then another 1.5. - 2 days from Sydney to Brisbane (3 - 4 days in total). If you're on a mission and in a hurry you could take the inland route via Wadonga/ Albury, Canberra, Armidale, etc... and probably get there in 2 days. almost 11 years ago

2 weeks will be plenty. The coast road is really great. My favourite parts are around the NSW southcoast - Narooma (try the golf course if you are into that), Batemans Bay (just south there are some great beaches - Rosedale, Broulee are two of my favourites). Further north, Jervis Bay is really pretty (Huskisson Pub has pretty good views and cold beer!). North of Sydney, there is of course Byron Bay. Definitely worth some time. almost 11 years ago

I have to agree with the guys, you have two option, one is a direct route, and the other is a more scenic. I would say if you have to do the coast. It is more of a drive and if you haven't been there, it is a beautiful drive. You have so much to see as you travel and well worth it. almost 11 years ago

Go inland. Get a great sausage roll in Jerilderie - morning tea. Lunch in west Wyalong, snack in Dubbo and overnight in Coonabarrabran,Dinner in tthe CBC - Coonabararbran Bowling Club approx - 1000 Kms - 12 hrs drive. The second day is only 700km easy :-) Get pies in Goondawindi, then home stretch either to brissie or the gold coast. almost 11 years ago
