I am leaving in September to start my working holiday in Australia, and I just wondered how much money other people have saved in preparation for their working holiday. You are supposed to arrive with $3600, for those who have done this trip would you say this is enough to get by before finding a job and place to live? Obviously everyone's spending habits are different and its impossible to say how much someone will spend, but some reassurance from others who have done this would be great!

Ideally, you will have lined a job up before you came. The job market is quite tight depending on your level of skill, where you’re located and what you’re willing to be earning etc.

In saying that - I recommend you budget for a daily allowance of AUD$100 excluding accommodation. This is an over-cautious budget, and probably can get by on half.

    Breakfast - $20
    Lunch - $20
    Dinner - $40
    Transport- $20

If you have an unlocked phone, go for the Optus pre paid. $30 per month will get you $300 worth of calls. Plenty of free wi-fi around, so get viber on your phone as well to make your international calls.

In most capital cities you can purchase a weekly transport ticket that gives you unlimited transport for a week. For example in Sydney you can buy a $42 travel ticket for trains, buses, ferries and trams.

Hope this helps. about 6 years ago
