We have done this trip many times and for us find it teadious and boring. The highway through Murray Bridge,Bordertown and Keith is very straight and very boring - we have not found much to do along the way so prefer to do the trip with minimal stops - about the only thing to see before reaching the Gold fields of Victoria is the Giant Koala building (and that is crappy!)
If time permits we prefer to take the longer but more scenic route via Mt Gambier and the Great Ocean Rd. This way you get to play tourist and visit many of the sites on the way - Coonawarra Wine region, Mt Gambier, Naracoorte Caves, Great Ocean Rd.
Mt Gambier is a very large country town now with most of the facilities you need (McDonalds! etc) Pop into the Umpherston Sinkhole (its free and very pretty - take along a few grapes to feed the wild but friendly possums that hang around the stairway of the sinkhole).
In the Coonawarra region you are spoilt for wineries - one of our favourites is Rymill but you may find others that we are yet to discover - grab a wine region map and plan your day.
